World Bank group empowers Enugu women, youths in Agriculture

The World Bank Assisted Project, Agro- Processing Productivity Enhancement And Livelihood Support   project, APPEALS, has selected 1,615 women and youths as beneficiaries in Enugu State.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Matthew Idu, while speaking in a chat, stated that this is part of measures to encourage youths to go fully into Agricultural system.

While noting that Enugu is one of the States where ‘Appeal project’ is working seriously to ensure that women and youths with passion for Agriculture are encouraged to go into the various value chains of Agriculture, the Commissioner said, “the Appeals also allow people   to choose their value chains based on their passion, the availability of other inputs like land, etc”

He added that once the business plan is ready, accepted and executed according to the tenets, of the agencies, they will be empowered to go into the value-chain they have so chosen. 

He restated, “Enugu State government is fully on the move that the youths must participate in Agriculture, that’s why we are part of the State where APPEALS, Agro processing productivity  enhancement and livelihood support project and livelihood project is working.”

“We have about 1, 615 women and youths that have been selected to participate as beneficiaries, we have done their training and that was done in three batches and in different institutions. And the next is to get their business plan done and then, Empowerment follows immediately 

“We are taking 1, 615 women and youths into different  value-chains  of Agriculture like cassava  production,  processing  and marketing, Rice production, processing  and marketing, cashew, production, processing and marketing and  the  livestocks which includes poultry, Aqua Culture, all the value chains has production processing and marketing .

 “And people  are allowed  to choose  their value chains base on  their passion,  base on the availability  of other input like land, as beneficiaries  once the business plan is ready and accepted done according to the tenets of the agencies, they will be empowered  to go into the value-chain they have chosen “, he stated.
