Anambra Govt vows to assist victims as fire guts Mgbuka market Nkpor

Barely 48 hours after fire gutted the Afia Coke market in Okpoko, Ogbaru local government area, the Old Mercedes Parts Dealers market, popularly called Mgbuka Nkpor, in Idemili North local government area, was at about 11pm on Wednesday also gutted by fire.

Mostly affected in the inferno that destroyed wares estimated into millions of naira, were the Divine Favour and Unity lines section.

Urging the victims to take heart when he physically visited the scene of the incident to acquaint himself with the extent of damages, the state commissioner of trade, markets, commerce and wealth creation, Hon Uchenna Okafor, vowed to meet with Governor Willie Obiano, with a view to assisting the victims.

He described the situation as unfortunate and urged the victims not to despair as the state government would compile their names for assistance.

Devastated, one of the victims cried, saying, “I am finished,  I lost over N1.5 million worth of wares and my children are in school. As I am crying now, I don’t have up to N5,000 in the world now. I lost cash of N42,000 that I kept in my shop.

Please let government and other good-spirited individuals come to my rescue.”

Also, another victim said he lost millions in the inferno, adding “I have not seen this type of fire that even melted the irons in the market. We have been rendered pocketless by the inferno and need help.”

The early arrival of fire fighters was said to have saved the entire market from burning down.
