Father seeks justice for son murdered by Abia vigilante
Yolamchi Ukaga, Aba
Mr Chikezie Mathew, father to late Precious Mathew, allegedly murdered by personnel of Abia Vigilante Service (‘Bakassi’) in Aba, has appealed to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to bring the killers of his son to justice.
Mathew explained that his 19-year-old son was killed by the vigilante for allegedly stealing a GSM phone belonging to another young man, identified as Izuchukwu, known as ‘Aka Baby’.
He stated that Izuchukwu, who took his son to the vigilante to report the matter was asked by the security group to bring N 6, 000 for them to investigate the matter.
He said that Izuchukwu asked them to give him time to go and bring the money for them, but did not return until the next day while the detained Precious was released in the evening.
Mathew explained that his son had earlier reported the matter to the vigilante for them to question him and Izuchukwu on what happened and to find solutions, but Izuchukwu did not turn up.
He noted that on the fourth day that Izuchukwu showed up with the money, which he gave to the vigilante, and they came to his house to see Precious, who had gone for a church programme.
Mathew stated when his son returned, he was told of the Bakassi vigilante’s visit and he went to see them with one of his friends and there he was locked up and beaten to death.
He said that since that day, the vigilante men had deserted their post, at Asa Amaato, and every effort to reach them had failed.
He explained that he had reported the matter which happened on April 13, 2021, to the police in Aba, but was told that the matter was to be handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
He also stated that he had gone to the State CID but that since then, “the police have been trying to reach the commander of the vigilante to hand over the boys, but he has not done so.”
He appealed to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to intervene and compel the security agencies to arrest the culprits to ensure justice for his son.
SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abia Command, when contacted, said the police received the complaint and currently investigating the murder through the State CID, Umuahia.
He said several efforts to reach the Commander of the ‘Bakassi’ Vigilante, Mr Martins Idika, had failed and text messages sent to him were not responded to.
Idika, who finally responded to a call put to him by some newsmen in Aba, including Orient Daily correspondent, denied that no person was killed by his men at Umungbe, Asa Amaato, in Osisioma LGA.
