Former lawmaker’s son, others nabbed for armed robbery
By Joseph Kingston, Calabar
Following a robbery operation which went sour, the Cross River state Police command has arrested three armed robbery suspects, including a son of a former lawmaker in the Cross River state House of Assembly.
Calabar residents had clamoured for the identity of the three arrested suspected robbers to be made public to no avail, but a security source, who preferred anonymity, said the vehicle used for the robbery operation belonged to the former member who represented Calabar municipality in the state House of Assembly.
He said, “the Hyundai Sonata car used for the robbery, with the number plate, CR 97-AO9, is an official government plate number. The car is that of Hon Uduak Akiba but she is not linked to that robbery operation. Her son drove the vehicle.”
Another anonymous source, told our reporter that the robbery operation was carried out by a 6-man gang at Chief Obot Street, State Housing Estate of Calabar Municipality, and that the security unit, Operation Akpakwu, later drove into the scene, gave the robbers a hot chase and later arrested three suspects while others escaped.
“The robbers were chased from State Housing by Chief Obot street while they were shooting sporadically. During the process of chasing after them by the Operation Akpakwu team, the driver of the armed robbery vehicle lost control and ran into a deep gutter.
“Three of the armed robbers were arrested, the other three escaped, one of them had bullet wounds. The son to a former House of Assembly member was the person who drove the car the robbers used for the operation,” he stated.
Efforts to contact Mrs Akiba as well as the spokesman for the State Police command, DSP Irene Ugbo, over the matter did not yield any result as at press time.
Meanwhile, Agba Jalingo, a citizen Journalist and Publisher/Editor-in-chief of the online news medium, Cross River Watch, who claimed to know Rt Hon Uduak Akiba’s family well, has blamed the former House member for allegedly over-pampering the suspect during his growing up days.
In a write up he published on his website, Jalingo also alleged that the car used for the armed robbery operation belonged to Hon. Akiba and that her son was the one driving it.
“In 2013, Hon. Uduak Akiba, lost her cool, assaulted and slapped a Police Corporal, Irene Ani, who was on duty at the State House of Assembly, for preventing Hon. Akiba’s son from accessing the Assembly car park with a chartered cab; this same son that is now allegedly involved in robbery.
“The reality that is dawning on her right now is that, when you continue to defend a child’s wrongdoing, when that child becomes an adult, you will also run around to bring that adult out of crime. Maybe that is also because snake no dey born lizard,” he stated.
