Escapee prisoner, robbery suspects killed in Edo
By Nosa Akenzua, Benin
Four armed robbery suspects, including one of the inmates of the two correctional centers in Benin City Edo state who escaped during the jailbreak that occurred during #ENDSARS protest in October last year, were last weekend, shot dead by police operatives during a robbery operation in Benin at the weekend
The unnamed suspects were part of four-man robbery gang who were alleged to have been terrorising operators of Point of Sales (POS) in various parts of the Benin metropolis and its environs.
It was gathered that the gang had attacked and robbed shop owners, POS operators and their customers in parts of Benin City and dispossessed their victims of cash, mobile phones and other personal items.
However, luck ran out on the men at the weekend when a combined team of police operatives and local vigilantes on patrol encountered them along Airport road and engaged them in gun battle where the suspects were killed on the spot while one managed to escape with gunshot injuries, only to be found dead in the early hours of Sunday around Ogida Barracks in Benin City.
Police authorities later identified the suspect as one of the prisoners who escaped from Benin Correctional Center while the police public relations officer in the state, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident saying that the police were on the trail of others.
Meanwhile, suspected Fulani herdsmen, at the weekend, attacked some farmers around Ovia South West local government area of the state and, allegedly inflicted injuries on some of the farmers. Residents of the area (Okohuo community) have however appealed to the police and the state government to come to their aid as they can longer access their farms to harvest their crops for fear.
