The Enugu State House of Assembly has urged local government councils in the state to complement efforts of the state government led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi towards transforming the state. The state lawmakers also hailed the state government for executing numerous road projects in parts of the state, despite challenges caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The chairman of the assembly’s committee on works, Mr. Chima Obieze, who made the call in Enugu on Wednesday during an oversight function of his committee to project sites in Enugu South local government area of the state, stressed that more could be achieved if the local councils complement the efforts of the state government.

“What we expect is that the local government will continue to collaborate with the good efforts of our governor so that as the state is doing its own beat, the local government will also be doing its own to make Enugu better,” he said.

Obieze said the committee embarked on the visit to monitor road projects by the governments in the 17 local government areas of the state. “We want to ascertain that the contractors are doing the project according to specifications as we do not want wastage of tax payers’ money,” he said.

The committee chairman expressed satisfaction with all the projects monitored within Enugu south, which includes  rehabilitation of Kenyatta market road, construction of perimeter fencing, reconstruction of One-Day road, construction of pedestrian crossing bridge at Agbani Road.

Obieze said that other roads monitored were construction of customary court building, construction of Ugwuaji sewage dumpsite, construction of access road to Christ Church, Uwani, ground water seepage control and soil stabilisation.

Contributing, the chairman of Enugu South local government Area, Mr. Monday Eneh, commended the state government’s efforts in providing infrastructure that had direct bearing on the people. He said his administration, which was just eight months old, had done a lot in alleviating people’s sufferings in the council area.

He commended the governor for the prudent management of funds, and as a local government, they would complement the state government’s effort, so that by 2023, Ugwuanyi’s administration would be the benchmark for future governors of the state.
