Fed Poly Ohodo: Controversy over pioneer rector’s appointment
By Uzoh Ugwueze, Enugu
The appointment of the sacked Rector of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, Prof. Edwin Onyeneje as the pioneer rector of the newly established Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, Igbo-Etiti local government area of Enugu state has been met with stiff resistance.
Orient Daily reports that Fed Poly is one of the six new polytechnics approved by the federal government, with a N2b take-off grant.
When the new rector’s appointment was announced, members of the Concerned Citizens of Enugu State (CCES) petitioned the relevant authorities over the development.
In the petition dated April 12, 2021 signed by members of the group, which include Dr Winifred Asogwa, Dr Steve Udegbunam, Dr Veronica Ogbodo, Mr. Chukwuma Ugwuagbo and Mr. Onyemaechi Nnaji and copied Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, Honourable Minister of State for Education, Chairman of ICPC, Executive Secretary National Board For Technical Education and National President of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), they kicked against the appointment on the ground that Onyeneje was dismissed from office as rector of IMT after being found wanting of maladministration by a Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by Enugu state government and had been under prosecution by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission since then.
The petitioners raised an alarm over what it called the “a huge damage, although reversible” done to the anti-corruption mantra of the federal government by Onyeneje’s appointment.
The expressed shock at the appointment which they described as “distasteful and embarrassing” and delved into his stint as rector of the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu and its end.
They wondered what message the federal government meant to pass to Nigerians especially the people of Enugu state by the appointment of Prof. Onyeneje and surmised that “the appointing authorities have done grave injustice to the people of Enugu state,” by so doing and
sought “an immediate reversal of the appointment of Professor Edwin Onyeneje as the rector of Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, Enugu state.”
