Ebonyi PDP crisis; Nwebonyi Ebonyi PDP: Nwebonyi summons Egwu, others to disciplinary committee
By Ruth Oginyi
The Bar. Onyekachi Nwebonyi State Working Committee, of the People’s Democratic Party PDP Ebonyi state, has directed the former governor of Ebonyi state, Senator Sam Egwu, and other suspended members of the party to appear before the disciplinary committee of the party over alleged anti-party activities.
The faction had, last year, purportedly suspended Egwu, representing Ebonyi Central, Senator Obinna Ogba, and the Senator Representing Ebonyi South zone, Senator Micheal Ama Nnachi from the party.
Meanwhile, Nwebonyi was suspended by the national working committee of PDP but a federal high court sitting in Abakaliki Ebonyi state last week sacked the PDP caretaker committee led by Fred Udogu from office.
A statement signed by the embattled chairman of the party, Nwebonyi and the secretary, Mr. Simon Anyigo, said that those suspended by the party last year over alleged anti-party activities were advised to appear before the committee and assured that nobody will be persecuted.
Others purportedly suspended by the State Working Committee of the party includes Hon Iduma Igariwey, member representing Afikpo South/North Federal constituency, Hon Anayo Nwonu, member representing Ezza North,/Ishielu Federal Constituency, Hon Sylvester Ogbaga, member representing Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency and Hon Chukwuma Nwazunku, member representing Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency.
Others include Hon Chinedu Make, a member representing the OHANAIVO federal constituency, two state Assembly members, and members of the Hon Fred Udeog’s led caretaker committee of the party in the state.
The statement reads “the State Working Committee of PDP led Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi wishes to warn all members and officeholders in the party who may want to indulge in anti-party activities to refrain from that as the party will not condone that. Those who indulge in such acts will be disciplined by the party’s constitution. Those who are under suspension are also advised to appear before the disciplinary committee as nobody is going to be victimized”.
It would be recalled that a Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki last week sacked the Caretaker Committee of the party set up by the National Working Committee of the party and affirmed Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi’s led State Working Committee as the authentic leadership of the party in the state.
In the statement, Barr Nwebonyi maintained that the party needed the support of every member to succeed in future elections and thanked the national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus for his show of statesmanship in accepting the verdict of the federal high court as the judgment is a clear demonstration of the principle of democracy and justice.
“The leadership of the party in the state, therefore, do express their solidarity and unalloyed support to the national leadership of the party”.
In reaction, however, the Fred Udogu faction of the people’s Democratic Party in Ebonyi state said none of their members would appear before the Nwebonyi committee because he is no longer recognised as a member of the PDP.
The publicity secretary of Fred Udogu caretaker committee Barr. Silas Onu, who spoke to our correspondent, said they will appeal the judgment of the federal high court which sacked the state caretaker from office last week.
In a telephone interview, Barr Onu noted that Nwebonyi lacks the locus standi to asked members of the party to appear before his purported disciplinary committee adding that no member of the PDP will appear before his committee.
“There is no disciplinary committee of PDP in place in Ebonyi state and no member of the PDP will appear before any committee set up by Nwebonyi. It is on record that Nwebonyi is no longer a member of the PDP. Though there is a judgment I want to tell you that we do not accept the judgment and we are challenging it.”
“The judge is not a member of PDP and cannot claim to be more interested in a party matter. We are appealing the judgment and, for the records, all those purportedly suspended will not appear because we do not recognise Nwebonyi as a member of the PDP.”
