Tension as bullet-laden truck falls in Onitsha
- Driver nabbed, conductor flees

There was palpable tension in Onitsha, Anambra State yesterday when an articulated truck fully loaded with cartons of live bullets fell into a ditch in the area.
The incident which reportedly occurred around 5.00a.m along Awka road in the exiting point of the commercial city while early worshipers were on their way to church services attracted heavy security presence within the area.
Orient Daily gathered that the truck, a Mercedes Benz 911 model was said to be moving the illicit goods out of the commercial city to an unknown location when the driver lost control, veered off the road and plunged into the ditch.
An eyewitness who preferred anonymity said the content of the truck were seen scattered all along the street, adding that the driver was arrested, while his conductor fled the scene of the incident.
He said, “The truck fell around 5am. The driver and his conductor who sustained minor injuries were making efforts to evacuate and conceal the truck’s content when they were caught up by police operatives who stormed the scene minutes later.
“Immediately the police discovered that the truck was laden with a confinement of live bullets, they called for backup and quickly arrested the truck driver while his conductor escaped,” he said.
The police spokesperson, Ikenga Tochukwu, when contacted, said he was unaware of the incident as at the time of filing this report, but promised to get back to our correspondent after confirmation.
