Insecurity: FCT police clamp down on covered number plates
By Ben Adoga
The FCT police command says it is collaborating with other security agencies to launch a massive operation against unauthorised covered vehicle plate numbers and tinted wind screens in the FCT.
The use of covered vehicle plate numbers, even by unauthorised persons, has recently become rampant in the FCT.
It has also been observed that criminal elements operate in the FCT openly using military stickers, military head gears as well as military belts which they display on dashboards to evade checks by security agents.
In a press statement issued by ASP Yusuf Mariam, FCT police command public relations officer, PRO, the command said it took the assignment seriously and that it is personally headed by the FCT police commissioner, CP Bala Ciroma.
The statement noted that “the operation has extremely become necessary due to the recent security threat analysis conducted by the joint team; which reveals that criminal syndicates now execute their nefarious activities using tinted vehicles with covered number plates.”
The team has sent a note of warning to all residents using unauthorised covered number plates and tinted vehicles within the FCT to desist as violators would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
The chairman of the joint team also solicited the cooperation of FCT residents in reporting all suspicious movements to the police.
It gave out the FCT police and emergency or distress numbers as 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883 or 112.
