Tension boiled over in Aba, the commercial hub of Abiastate on Wednesday, following the gruesome killing of a widow, identified as Mama Peace, by a police officer at the premises of the Aba Central Police Station.

Orient Weekend gathered that the deceased, who was said to be in her early 50s, was hawking clothing materials at the police station when the Divisional Traffic Officer-2 (DTO-2) of the Aba Central Police Station, simply identified as SUPO Innocent, accidentally crush her to death while trying to re-park a car, Emel 320 (ML320), brand of Mercedes Benz.

According to an eyewitness, Mr Innocent was trying to reverse the vehicle probably to create space for another vehicle, but suddenly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the woman. The victim reportedly died on the spot before she was pulled out from the wall, where the vehicle pinned her and subsequently taken to the police clinic, at the Aba Area Command.

The witnesses who preferred anonymity, further told this paper that the deceased came to the station attend to some of her customers, before meeting her untimely death. “I witnessed the incident. It happened at about 1.00pm. I came into the station to take something and I actually greeted Mama (the deceased) when I passed where she was. I saw a black Jeep that had someone inside it, probably trying to drive out and I went my way, not having anything in mind and within some seconds, I heard a loud sound. On rushing out as everyone did, and what I saw will disturb me for a long time.

“I was shaken, as I saw her practically dead with blood all over the ground. It was an accident that no one can explain or may find difficult to understand, because that place is a small place to warrant such an impact”.

It was further discovered that the vehicle does not belong to SUPO Innocent, but that of his friend who left the car on his care. “He was called upon by another superior officer to quickly remove the vehicle which caused the incident”, a source said.

The Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed the incident and described the incident, as an unfortunate accident. He also confirmed that the body of the deceased has been deposited in a mortuary, while the officer is in police custody.

The deceased who was to hail from Adah in Ebonyi state, had a teenage daughter, Blessing.
