Mixed reactions have greeted the leaked video of sex act by two former students of the Babcock University even as the management of the institution had disclosed that the duo had been expelled over the incident.
Orient Weekend gathered that the male and female students of the missionary school were caught on camera having sex in what appears to be a clinic. While the incident appeared to have taken place few months ago, video clip of the act was leaked on the internetlast Tuesday and had since gone viral on the social media.
The Babcock University’s director of communication and marketing,MrJoshua Suleiman, who reacted to the scandal on Wednesday, disclosed that the unidentified persons involved in the sex tape were no longer students of the institution.
The statement read further: “The video above referred is, unfortunately, a sad commentary on the moral decadence that has assailed our society at large, a manner of behaviour that is alien and antithetical to the value of our university. It is not worth a tinge of fascination, but a ground of great concern for all,” the statement read further.
“The boy in the video was expelled from Babcock University in February this year after investigation and the due process proved that he was into certain grievous misconducts, the acts for which the university has zero-tolerance.
“His girlfriend in the same video, until the video broke out, a third-year student of accounting of this university. After due process, she was expelled from the university for violation of university rules and regulations.
“The place where the immoral act took place, according to her written statement, was at Saint Bridget Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, where the boy has been undergoing rehabilitation for different destructive addictions. According to the girl, the incident took place in April this year during school vacation when she visited the boy at the hospital. The act did not take place at Babcock University.
“Babcock University remains committed to the highest moral standards and would remain a standard-bearer for quality education in standard character, learning and in service to humanity. We are happy to be saddled with this challenge as an institution because it propels us to contribute to the greatness of this nation and the security of a bright future for our children.”
Meanwhile, mixed reactions have greeted the leaked sex video with many commentators condemning the couple as well as school management for their role in the saga. KoteOnungweObe-Eleme, a Port Harcourt based journalist expressed outrage over the incident. “You mean they actually recorded themselves? And it took place inside a hospital, where the guy was a patient?I think the school did wrong to have expelled the female student. It’s within her right to mate with anyone of her choice without duress”.
Emeka Okoye, a media practitioner described the act by the students as immature.According to him, the couple were very stupid by making video tape of such act in an unconventional place. “Infactthey are too much stupid to have made a video of their sex act not minding the today’s outcome. As for expulsion, university is a place for learning good morals and not a motel or hotel any ama good evening so such sweet and immoral act. So, expelling them was the best decision, anything less than that means a total slap on morality.
But Mr. Lawrence Ibeshared a different opinion on the incident: “It’s really a mistake for Babcock University to expel the students involved in the sex video. If schools are meant to be a reformation center, then there’s nothing in that video to make those students lose 3yrs of their studies and waste all the expenses made by their parents.
“What we saw in the video is a consensual sex by two grown adults who are in love. Yes, they were foolish to make a video but this does not warrant being expelled. What the students did is wrong and not acceptable, there are other ways to caution and punish them like taking away a semester from them and not total expulsion. Should we ruin the future of these students just for a foolish mistake they made?”
Another commentator who spoke under anonymity described the decision of the university as unfair. “I am not condoning the act but expelling the girl was rather a harsh one. I think she should be suspended for a month or two because she was a victim.
She urged the university authorities to reconsider their decision on expulsion of the lady because: that’s three years of her life that she will never get back.Three years of wasted tuition fees…I wish the parents can stand by this girl at this time and sue the school. This is some shitty decision by the school authorities”, she adds
Another contributor, Omo Oba also urged the Babcook university to recall the lady. He wrote: “You guys will have to rescind that expulsion decision for that lady in question. They are adults and the incidence didn’t take place in school and they were on vacation too. It’s a challenge to the character-building model of the school to rise up and get things right than throw away baby with bath water. There is no moral standard in abdicating your responsibility in training students now that the chicken has come home to roost. This is just a way to run away from work. That expulsion must be revoked.
“Rehabilitate the student involved not expel them. Babcook is citadel of learning then let it be so. So what if that lady commits suicide as she is looking at 3 years of her life been blown away just because she had sex with her boyfriend and the tape, made its way to the internet? Yes there is moral decadence, the schools need to check inward, if they are doing what ought to be done.
