Lecturer, 55, remanded by Ekiti court for raping a minor
By Demola Atobaba, Ado-Ekiti
An Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Ado-Ekiti, has ordered one Dr Kayode Samuel Ayinde (55) to be remanded in the correctional centre, Ado-Ekiti, Orient Daily has learnt.
While handing down the order, Chief Magistrate I.T. Ola-Olorun said the remand request granted would allow the prosecutor to forward the duplicate case file to the office of director of public prosecutions for legal advice.
`Dr Ayinde, a Ph. D holder, is a lecturer at the State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti. He is also one of the Shepherd of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
An officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Iyaniwura Oluwanifesimi announced his appearance before one state counsel, Edabo Atane, from the state ministry of justice, took over the prosecution.
According to the charge, made available to Orient Daily, Ayinde was charged with the offence, reasonably suspected to be rape of a 12-year-old girl who, alongside her parents, lived within the Ado-Ekiti Magisterial district, sometime in August, 2020.
The parents of the girl, however, absolved the cleric of the charge against him, saying, rather, that their daughter was wayward and a liar. They said Ayinde was, indeed, their benefactor in many ways.
The offence, as alleged, was said to be contrary to section 357 of the Criminal Code Cap. C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The matter was adjourned to July 27, 2021 for mention.
Rape of underage children by clerics and other related offences have become a recurring matter in the state over a period of time now, Orient Daily reports.
