Jungle justice: Mob kills suspected kidnapper in Abuja
By Ben Adoga
A mob action in Wuse 2 area of Abuja has resulted in the burning to death of a suspected kidnapper who turned out to be a one-chance operator.
Another who sustained injuries is said to be receiving treatment in a hospital in Abuja.
A video which trended earlier on Tuesday showed two young men stripped naked and beaten to a pulp in a mob action.
In the video, it was claimed that the victims were kidnappers who took their victim with two children and, along the way, threw the woman out of the moving vehicle and made attempts to do away with the kids when they were intercepted.
However, the FCT police command say this is not totally true.
In a press statement by ASP Yusuf Mariam, FCT police public relations officer, PPRO, the victims are one-chance operators.
The statement stated in part: “The attention of the FCT police command has been drawn to the viral video of a mob action in the social media, suggesting that the persons being mobbed are ‘suspected kidnappers’ who abducted a woman and her child at Wuse 2, Abuja.
“Contrary to the speculation, preliminary investigation reveals that, it was an incident of one-chance robbery involving the two suspects in the video, who attempted to defraud their victim in a painted taxi with registration number Abuja KUJ 959 AQ.
“However, police operatives from Wuse Division swiftly moved to the scene upon receiving the information, unfortunately, due to mob action, one of the suspects was burnt to death while the other suspect is currently receiving medical attention.”
The statement stated that the FCT police commissioner, CP Bala Ciroma, had ordered a discreet investigation into the incident and appealed to members of the public to shun jungle justice.
