The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ebonyi State branch Wednesday called on Governor David Umahi to employ young and energetic health workers to assist in fighting coronavirus pandemic.
The recommendation is coming after the State Government announced that all the retired health workers in the State should come and join the State health workers to fight covid-19 scourge in the State.
Ebonyi NMA said in a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. John Egede and Secretary, Dr. Nwoye Chukwuemeka, that health workers and the elderly were the most vulnerable with higher risk in any outbreak and appeal to the State Government to employ young doctors, nurses and other health workers who are not currently working.
They argued further that deployment of the retired health workers to assist in fighting coronavirus may be good because of their wealth of experience especially if they will work at the background but they are always the most vulnerable hence the need to engage younger health workers.
The group further called on the Christian Association of Nigeria and other religious leaders in the State to stop religious gathering for the main time in the State. “The pandemic has shown us that our health system needs a major support. Must it be fire brigade approach all the time? This is the time to fix our general hospitals.
“A situation where we have only one Doctor, one or two nurses, no lab scientist, a Pharmacist in general hospital is very unacceptable”, the statement said.
NMA maintained that the fight against Covid-19 should not be left for Alex Ekwueme federal teaching hospital alone the general hospitals should as well as standard private hospitals should be engaged. The Doctors however commended the state government for its various steps to tackle the corona pandemic and urged the people to obey the decisions taken by the government to prevent the disease from spreading to the state.
