Three years after late Sylvester Ajumobi was gruesomely murdered in South Africa, medical experts at the Unity Hospital, Obosi, Idemili North local government area of Anambra state, are said to be battling to save the life of his wife, Mrs. Chisom Ajumobi.
Mrs. Ajumobi, a mother of two, is hospitalised because she was allegedly doused with acid by three women, one of whom was her friend and the mastermind of the attack.
Ajumobi’s peril started when she harboured her friend in her one-room apartment. However, when the young mother noticed that the lady she sheltered free of charge was bringing around men, some of whom she thought to be of questionable character, she (Ajumobi) raised objection to the action and threatened her friend with ejection from the apartment if she continued with the habit.
However, sources informed that Ajumobi (now the breadwinner of her immediate family) started fending for her family immediately after the burial of her husband and, in a bid to cope with the vagaries of an imminent and uncertain widowhood, left her husband’s family to rent a one-room apartment at Ugamuma village, Obosi in Idemili North local government area for herself and her two children.
Having tried several businesses without success, it was learnt that the young widow decided to trade on second-hand clothing (also called okirika), the business she was doing before she was attacked by her friend.
A friend of the Ajumobi family, Comrade Emeka Ikechukwu Orizu, said the badly wounded young mother had, on December 2018, out of pity, accommodated her friend who had approached her for assistance.
Noticing the type of company her friend kept, aorizu said, “Mrs. Ajumobi warned that she would report her friend’s association with such questionable persons to the vigilante (in the area). On hearing the threat, her friend started fomenting plans to kill her.”
Ajumobi, indeed, went ahead to report the matter to the vigilante group at Ugamuma village Obosi but the group could not act on the report.
According to Orizu, the widow felt threatened by her friend’s attitude and “What was left to her as option was to move away from her house to one of her sisters’ house for security reasons.”
On a visit to her home, probably to pick more clothes for herself and her children, she saw the said friend. Done with her mission and, on her way back, she was violently attacked by her friend and had to be rescued by passersby”, Comrade Emeka Ikechukwu Oziru stated.
In a petition to the state commissioner of police, CP John Abang, Ajumobi pleaded for full-fledged investigation on the matter.
Orient Weekend investigations on the attack on the widow revealed that, on Friday October 4, 2019, the victim was invited by her friend, ostensibly to effect amicable settlement of the rift between the them. We learned that, contrary to this and, unknown to the victim, her friend and two of her cohorts had prepared some liquid, suspected to be acid, with which they doused her on arrival, leading to her current sojourn at the Unity Hospital in the town.
When contacted, the divisional police officer of the Obosi division, Mr.Usman Ibrahim Oboshi, confirmed to our correspondent that the station indeed, received the petition but that investigation was ongoing.
