Operatives of the Ebonyi state police command have impounded more than 167 commercial motorcycles in Abakaliki, the state capital, for violating the state government ban on operation of bikes in the night.
The state police public relations officer, DSP Loveth Odah, told Orient Daily that over N600,000 had been raked in for the state government from defaulters and that the motorcycles could only be released to their owners on payment of N8,500 fine, as stipulated by law in the state.
She, however, warned that the command would not hesitate to arrest anyone disobeying the ban on operation of motorcycle in the night in the state.
Commercial motorcycles were banned from 7 p.m. in the state. Odah explained that the ban was to curb crime in the state but that it was being flouted by some persons leading to the police action of confiscation of motorcycles used in breach of the law.
Orient Daily reports that the impounded motorcycles were seen parked in front of the State Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS).
