Breaking: Senate confirms Mahmood Yakubu as INEC chairman

The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu by President Muhammadu Buhari as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the second term which spans five years. His confirmation took place today during the Senate’s plenary.
The president had on October 27, 2020 reappointed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for a second term pending Senate confirmation making him the first Chairman of the electoral body to get a second term.
However his first term in office ended on November 9, 2020 while the Senate were still yet to confirm his nomination. This prompted him to handover to AVM Ahmed Mu’azu (Rtd), the Electoral Commissioner representing the North East Zone to take charge of the Commission in acting capacity.
With this Senate confirmation, the INEC Chairman will be sworn it shortly to kick start his second term in office. His first task will be to oversee the conduct of the legislative by-elections scheduled for December 5, 2020 across many constituencies in the country.
The next major assignment for the INEC boss would be the Anambra State governorship election in November, 2021.
