By Jonathan Asikason
Awka residents have urged the new leadership of Awka Development Union of Nigeria (ADUN) to reunite the town as well as read a riot act on cultism – a cankerworm, which they said, has eaten deep into the fabrics of their society.
These calls were made shortly after the town successfully organized its long overdue Union’s election, which hitherto was suspended as part of Anambra state government’s efforts to contain the global pandemic.
Converging at Prof Dora Akunyelu Women Development Center over the weekend, Ndi Awka in due compliance to Anambra state government’s lift on ban suspension of Igweship and town union elections, democratically elected a new crop of leaders to steer the ship of the town.
The new leadership, led by Barrister Kanayo Nwogbo, as President General, has the trio of Onyebuchi Nwobu, Chidozie Oforah, Pius Enendu as Deputy President General, Vice President East and Vice President Abuja respectively.
Others include Chief Alex Nwachuchkwu, who was elected the Secretary General of the Union and Mr Okechukwu Anakor, his Assistant. Mr Arinze Chijioke was elected Treasurer. Mr Sunday Nweke emerged the Financial Secretary, while Mr Emeka Oyeka was elected the union’s Public Relations Officer.
The duo of Mr Vincent Okafor and Mr Vincent Nwafor emerged Director of Sports and Provost respectively.
Addressing the newly elected executive, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters, Mr Greg Obi, admonished them to sue for peace among the people of the community and ensure that they carried everyone along.
Represented by Mr Henry Nwasike, Mr Obi noted that without peace, no meaningful development can thrive in any society, even as he advised Ndi Awka to give their support to the new President-General to enable him work efficiently for the community.
Traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, who was present at the event, thanked Anambra state government for all the support it has been giving the traditional stool, and for standing for the truth. He advised the new executives to always toe the path of truth and work for the good of the community.
Immediate past PG Awka Development Union, Nigeria (ADUN), Engr Tony Okechukwu, expressed happiness that the election which has lingered since 2015 has finally held, and thanked Anambra state government for its support. He charged the new PG whom he said has served the community as PG in the past,
Ndi Awka, who participated in the election expressed happines and confidence with the result of election. They called upon the new PG to take the bull by the horn in reuniting all warring factions in town, as well as fight cultism which they said has stolen the youngsters.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected executive, the PG, Barr. Nwogbo, commended the past leadership, the state government and every Awka citizen for the confidence reposed in him, assuring that with the experience he gathered when he served as a deputy PG and a PG, he has all it takes to broker peace and move the community forward. He also promised to work in alliance with Anambra state government to fight cultism in Awka.
