Ace broadcaster, Owolabi escapes assassination in PH as NUJ condemns the attempt.
Mr. Segun Owolabi, the Business Manager, South-South of Silverbird Radio and Television in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital escaped an attempt by some yet to be identified gunmen who tried to kill him on Monday evening.
Four of the masked gunmen men in a tricycle reportedly trailed the broadcaster and opened fire at his vehicle just as he was about to enter his house in the Rivers State capital at about 9 p.m.
But it was gathered that Owolabi, who is also a pastor at Christ Embassy, on sighting the masked gunmen, rather than entering his house, drove off, while the gunmen gave him a chase while firing at his car to demobilize the Tyres.
Fortunately, he was able to drive to safety.
Owolabi who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said he owes his safety to God and is eternally grateful to Him for His protection.
The State Police Command is yet to comment on the issue at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has raised alarm over the unsuccessful attempt on the life of one of Owolabi urging security agencies in the state to investigate and bring the culprit to book.
In a statement signed by the State Chairman, Stanley Job Stanley and Secretary, Ike Wigodo, the union expressed worry over the resurgence of insecurity in the state and called on the relevant security agencies to be proactive towards tackling the menace.
The statement further urged the state government and security agencies to work closely to secure the lives of citizens living and doing business in the state.
According to the statement, “the resurgence of insecurity in the state is worrisome. We are concerned about the security of our members and other citizens living and doing business in the state.
“The government and the police should work closely and be more proactive towards tackling the insecurity situation in the state”, the statement noted.
