Yolamchi Ukaga, Aba
The Aba South Environmental Sanitation Court, presided over by David Micah, a magistrate, has remanded, one Titilayo Farouk, of No 6. St. Michael’s Road, Aba, in Police custody, for open defaecation.
Micah, while delivering judgment, explained that, by the act, Farouk had contravened the Abia State law CAP 139, Volume 6 of 2005, as amended and should remain in police custody, until the landlord provides functional toilet and bathroom facilities for the occupants, while issuing a bench warrant to other tenants.
Mr. Iheanyichukwu Ubani, permanent secretary, ministry of environment, frowned at landlords, who rent out accommodation to people, without providing conveniences in their facilities and summoned the landlord of the property to the ministry for questioning.
The ministry in a joint exercise with Abia State Public Utilities Management Agency (APUMA), sealed the affected areas, noting that the health of the people is paramount to the state government and so, would not allow anybody to transact business in such an unhygienic environment.
Similarly, a sanitation court sitting in Obingwa local government area of Abia state, presided over by Chukwuma Aliga, a magistrate, sentenced one Iniobong Akpan, of No 135 Ikot- Ekpene road Aba, to two weeks imprisonment for disposing feaces into the drainage.
The Magistrate also ordered 20 other defaulters to perform community service.
