The Edo state coordinator of Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response Team (SGBV- RT), Barr Charity Ebosele at the weekend in Benin City said that 150 cases of alleged rape and violence were recorded with 20 persons convicted in the state within the third quarter of the year 2020.

Ebosele, who spoke to our correspondent in Benin City after the one-day sensitisation programme organised by the Edo State National Orientation Agency (NOA) said that the situation within the period under review, clearly showed that immorality was on the increase and cautioned men to stop using all forms of abuses, especially rape, against women.

While observing that women also raped men, Ebosele added that men were more involved in the unlawful act than women and advised married men to seek the consent of their wives before having sex and disclosed that any forceful act against a spouse, even if they were lawfully married, for the purpose of sex was rape.

She said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Edo State Assault Referral Center (SARC) recorded high cases of rape and sexual violence, disclosing that appeals to the participants to report the cases to the center, were not successful as they failed to do so.

Her words:” In our society today, men rape women, women rape men and the same goes for boys and girls. There is no day in the country without a reported case of sexual violence, especially rape, in the media and police station. Like a cankerworm, the offence of rape has eaten deep into our society. When such situations arise, the victims shy away from reporting the cases at that point, often leading to a dead end.”

Mrs Grace Ewere, NOA Edo state director, had, in her lecture, said the agency, in its quest to continuously inform the public and other relevant stakeholders, organised an event to discuss and meaningfully engage the people on issues that were germane to healthy living among the people and enhancement of economic growth in Nigeria.
